A corner of Africa in Colombia! The first free town in colonial America was founded in 1603 by Benkos Biohó, a fugitive slave who hid there with 36 other men and women. Until the 1960s, there was no connecting road between the main road and San Basilio de Palenque. That is why the Creole language of the Palenquero, which is not spoken anywhere else in the world, was able to be preserved. This small town that was declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005, has a fascinating history and is the place where many styles of Afro-Colombian music and dance originate.
